Mailata to miss massive NFL game for Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without the services on Australian offensive lineman Jordan Mailata for the second consecutive week.

The former South Sydney prospect turned NFL star missed the Eagles’ grudge match with the Dallas Cowboys last week, and has failed to recover in time for this week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 24-year-old suffered a knee sprain during practice in the lead-up to the game against the Cowboys, which the Eagles lost, 41-21.

Mailata was ruled out of Friday’s practice and officially out of what has suddenly become a very important fixture for both teams. The Eagles, and much more surprisingly the Chiefs, are both 1-2 from their first three games.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said after the loss to the Cowboys that there was no timetable for Mailata’s return, but hoped that it would be sooner rather than later.

It’s some brutal luck for the Australian, who had enjoyed a very successful 2021 season so far, winning a weekly performance award and inking a new four year, $108.7 million deal with the team.

The one silver lining for Mailata is that missing the Eagles’ week four game due to injury might allow him to view the NRL grand final, which takes place hours before the Sunday slate of NRL fixtures.

The ex-Rabbitoh posted a message of support on social media for his old team.

“Good luck this Sunday when you guys go out there, I’ll be watching – it’s going to be really early here but stoked to be still repping the Bunnies colours here and still watching you guys,” he said before thumping the logo on his South Sydney polo shirt.
