Australia manages to dribble out the clock as they prevail over Italy 86-83 in an absolutely thrilling contest!
The Boomers were given a mighty scare in that one, with Italy putting up a terrific fight in the end, pulled through in what was a real team effort.
Perhaps most pleasing for Australia will be the well-rounded scoring which saw five players in double figures, led by Jock Landale’s 18 points as the Italian defence keyed on in Patty Mills.
Italy still finished the match shooting 50 per cent from the field, so coach Brian Goorjian will have some defensive wrinkles he’d like to iron out but you can’t complain with what is now a 2-0 start to these Olympics.
More importantly for Australia, it will likely be able to avoid USA in the first knockout stage having most likely secured the top spot in the group with the win.
