Ikin reveals first major Broncos target as axe hovers

Brisbane’s incoming head of football, Ben Ikin, has revealed the first player he plans to target for the Broncos in his quest to rebuild the struggling juggernaut.

Ikin has already started scanning the NRL marketplace ahead of his first week at Red Hill in his bid to turn the embattled Broncos around.

As head of football, Ikin will oversee roster management and recruitment while contributing to coaching practices. And the Maroons great said he has his eye on one particular player to start driving the change he wants to see.

“I think he is already on the radar at the Broncos, but geez it would be good to get him – Kurt Capewell,” Ikin said on Fox Sports.

“As a Queenslander and a guy who lives the standards you want, get him home. He would be a magnificent pick-up.”

Brisbane had already identified Capewell before Ikin’s appointment with the Penrith star on the market despite being under contract this season.

The Broncos have also expressed interest in signing State of Origin centre Dane Gagai.

The news comes as Brisbane prepares to cut several players from its roster.

With 11 members of the current 30-man squad uncontracted for next season and Tevita Pangai Jr and Matt Lodge look set for mid-season switches, a host of other players appear on the verge of leaving Red Hill.

Players reportedly in the firing line include, Alex Glenn, John Asiata, Dale Copley, Ben Te’o, Jamayne Isaako, Brodie Croft, Corey Oates and Richie Kennar.

Ikin’s first job will be to assess which players will be part of the rebuild while trying to free up enough space in the salary cap to make a play for off-contract stars.
