There are fresh concerns for the health of Cronulla captain Wade Graham, after he suffered his fourth head knock of the season while also hyperextending his knee in a cruel double injury blow.
The unfortunate incident occurred midway through the first half of Cronulla’s clash against Penrith when Graham found his head in an awkward position while attempting to go low in a tackle on winger Robert Jennings.
Graham was taken off the field for an HIA, which he passed before it was ruled he hyperextended his knee.
Rugby league great Phil Gould said Graham did himself no favours by putting his head in an awkward position, which he claims has cruelled the Cronulla captain as of late.
“Bad technique, that’s really bad technique,” Gould told Nine. “Head-on, low tackle, head to the side. It’s his technique that gets him in trouble.
“Those head-on tackles, I don’t care what age your kid is, head-on tackles – don’t let them tackle like that.
“He’s had a number of concussion issues and they’ve all been the same way – making tackles with poor technique down low.”
Tonight’s incident is the fourth time this season he’s been forced to leave the field for a further assessment due to a head knock
Graham back in Round Three failed to finish a match against the Eels after suffering a head knock. Then in Round Five, he suffered another head knock which forced the 30-year-old to take a two-week lay-off.
In Round Eight, he suffered another high hit against the Storm but passed his HIA on that night despite not returning to the field.
Sharks flyer caps sparking try
While Graham again passed his HIA, former teammate Paul Gallen admits he’s concerned with the mounting number of head injuries this season for Sharks skipper.
“I had no doubt he had a head knock there,” Gallen told Nine.
“I think the reason his knee gave way was because things weren’t working properly.
“He definitely got up and hyperextended his knee, but I think it was because he wasn’t in total control of his body.
“Fingers crossed he has passed the HIA and there’s no further issue with his head because has had a couple of bad ones this year. No doubt his knee is the issue at the moment.”
